This Week in Home Video: The Conjuring, Only God Forgives, Before Midnight, Halloween at the Royal

This Week in Home Video previews all the latest Blu-ray, DVD and on-demand titles hitting the street this week, plus lost gems, crazed Cancon, outrageous cult titles and the best places to rent, buy, talk or see movies in Toronto.

NEW RELEASES

The Conjuring (Warner Bros.)

Spooky "based on true events" haunted house story that favours old-school chills of the more AMITYVILLE than PARANORMAL ACTIVITY variety. Extras include the real-life Perron family reliving all of this, a neat look at Demonology and a rather self-congratulatory feature "Scaring the Shit Out of You" in which director James Wan (who also birthed us SAW) talks frankly about his craft.

The Internship (20th Century Fox)

Google based comedy reuniting 90s' funny men Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn (and an obligatory Will Ferrell cameo) plays it broad for laughs. Much funnier if you have ever worked in a corporate office, or are interested in Google's escalating cult like control over Hollywood (see also, Scientology).

Before Midnight (Sony)

Final part of Richard Linklater's lyrical /BEFORE SUNRISE/BEFORE SUNSET trilogy finds the relationship between Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and CĂŠline (Julia Delpy) severely tested by the passage of time. Almost 95% of this movie features two people talking to each other, such is Linklater's skill he manages to both keep it on point and draw new observations about the battle of the sexes.

Only God Forgives (eOne)

Meandering visual poem will disappoint fans of Nicolas Winding Refn's more brassy and literal vehicle DRIVE but please fans of total cinema who keep reminding people that even BLADE RUNNER was slated when it was originally released.

Chilling Visions: 5 Senses of Fear (Scream Factory)

Anthology featuring five short horror tales based on human senses (anyone sense the barrel's bottom approaching?) - Sense, See, Touch, Taste and Listen.

TV

Nikita - Season 3 (Warner Bros.)

Third season of the third iteration of Luc Besson's original girls'n'guns mandate follows the format (popularized by the likes of Pamela Anderson's V.I.P - remember that?) but will please fans of this Toronto shot series no doubt. Features all 22 high octane episodes, deleted scenes and a gag reel.

CULT

The Vincent Price Collection (Scream Factory)

Timely boxed set of some of the Price is right's best gothic horror films made at MGM with Roger Corman, including WITCHFINDER GENERAL, THE PIT AND THE PENDULUM, THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER, THE ABOMINABLE DR. PHIBES,THE HAUNTED PALACE and THE MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH, plus a huge haul of Scream Factory's amazing extras. Like a fine 6 course meal at an immaculately expensive restaurant, best to take lots of time to ingest the quality of this set.

The Uninvited (The Criterion Collection)

Londoners Ray Milland and Ruth Hussey purchase a cheapie lonely cliff-top house in Cornwall, only to discover that it actually carries a ghostly price from beyond the grave. Vintage haunted house film makes a great double bill with THE CONJURING. Featuring a stunning new 2K digital film restoration, new visual essay by filmmaker Michael Almereyda, two radio adaptations, from 1944 and 1949, both starring Ray Milland, original trailer and a booklet featuring an essay by critic Farran Smith Nehme and a 1997 interview with director Lewis Allen.

STILL FRESH
