Queen streetcars blocked due to swelling taxi protest
You may want to consider an alternate route home this evening if you rely on the 501 streetcar. That's because Queen Street is still blocked off, at least partially, from University Avenue until Bay Street thanks to the ongoing taxi protest.
Around mid-afternoon today, Toronto taxi drivers spilled on to the street, shutting down the intersection at Queen and Bay streets. "Injustice! Injustice!" yelled some. "Shame on Tory!" chanted others.
Mayor John Tory addressed the media earlier today and asked the cab operators to cease protesting. "There is no excuse for putting the safety of the public at risk, for blocking ambulances and first responders, for police officers being knocked to the ground," he said, according to CBC News.
Toronto taxi drivers want the city to ban UberX. The city will be releasing its report on how to best regulate the ride-sharing service in spring 2016.
It's unclear how long this protest will last. Though, reports from yesterday estimated it would draw to close at 7 p.m. tonight.
