G20 Barrier Fence Front Street

The G20 Summit Resident Information Guide

The G20 Summit Resident Information Guide is now out. As Toronto counts down the days to the G20, residents within the traffic zone have been given a four-page Information Guide outlining the precautionary measures to be taken by the building's management services.

After the first sights of protest yesterday and the delivery of this typo-ridden yet still somewhat intimidating memo later in the day, I'm starting to reconsider my decision to tough it out at home this weekend. Looking out along a soon to be foliage-free Front Street littered with men and women in uniform, I'm finally starting to feel the burden of living in close proximity to the Convention Centre.

Certain parts of the document could easily be mistaken for an excerpt from Max Brooks' Zombie Survival Guide. Check out some of the highlights, or view the full guide for yourself:

  • "We would also recommend that your [SIC] put together a personal emergency kit to keep you going for 72 hours, including but not limited to the following: water, food, manual can opener, flashlight and batteries, battery-powered or wind-up radio, first aid kit, special needs items (prescriptions medications, infant formula or equipment for people with disabilities), extra keys and cash (include smaller bills and change for payphones)."

  • "If you are going out into the crowd you are recommended to be in casual dress (jeans and a t-shirt) as business attire may put you in a susceptible position."

  • "Do not initiate conversations with protestors."

  • "You will most likely not be able to commute by vehicle."

  • Residents have been asked to refrain from using certain stairwells during the next week, because the doors may not close and could create an "unwanted access point to our building for the protestors."
