Fashion Launch as House Party in Parkdale

As a long-time fan of Jules Power's chunky necklaces, I was excited to see that the experienced designer had finally gone back to her first love - clothes - with a spring/summer 2010 collection of wonderfully eclectic, and affordable, pieces.

I headed to her launch, housed in her chic Sorauren Avenue studio, where the small collection was stylishly showcased against the white-painted brick. (Jonathan and I drooled over the studio space, but regardless of how fancy it looks, Power is keeping it local - she lives across the street.)

While Power did stints at Danier, Roots and Joe Fresh over the years, it was her home-life that got her started on designing her own stuff. First came the jewelry. "I needed something quiet to do while my kids were sleeping!" the redhead laughs. "Sewing is really noisy, but jewelry is pretty quiet."

Her necklaces were a big hit, and will be still be sold, alongside the new collection, at Chasse GardĂŠe. The baubles are all-natural, but very un-hippie - the polished agate, silk, leather, wood, and even nuts used all have an elegant feel to them.

Now, Power says noise be damned, and is sewing up a loud frenzy in the aforementioned studio. Her new clothing gives off the same unexpected vibe her jewelry does, mixing casual pieces with sexier numbers.

For instance, there's a corset with an antique botanical print and nude lace top with ruched shoulders, but some of the collection's signature pieces happen to be a pair or two of the high-fashion sweatpants that have been gaining in popularity the last few seasons.

That down-to-earth side scores a few more points in the button-up shirts in red gingham, blue check, and chambray, while the dressy side rallied with a gold linen tiered miniskirt, and a very fashion-forward skinny black shirt with pointy shoulders.

"I wanted to do everyday pieces that you can really dress up or wear more casually," says Power. "But they're all really feminine - more naturally sexy, rather than overly trendy."
