Morning Brew: January 2nd, 2007

Your (still hungover) morning news roundup for Tuesday January 2nd, 2007:

The New Year brings to city hall new powers as the Toronto Act has been instated. Mayor Miller likes what the act brings but is still pushing for more money from the provincial and federal governments.

Toronto rang in the New Year, and soon after recorded its 1st homicide of 2007 when a woman was shot and killed at the front doorway of her own Malvern home. Then came a string of other unrelated shootings around the city.

January 1st was the warmest New Year's Day on record. A temperature of 9.2C yesterday seems like an appropriate way to follow up the warmest December on record.

Filed under odd: A 5-metre tall bronze statue was stolen from an Oakville park and police suspect that it may be sold on the scraps blackmarket.

Also filed under odd: A partier in a lakefront parking lot somehow let his rental SUV slip into the lake, before swimming to shore and then fleeing the scene.
