Alicia Keys Shows Up At International Aids Conference, Stephen Harper Doesn't

Morning Brew: August 14, 2006

Your morning news roundup for Monday, August 14, 2006:

After my internet fiasco last week, I promise to make it up to you all by waking up a whole hour earlier (4:30am!) and drinking an extra cup of Sumatran every day this week. If you see me at your local cafe, I'll buy you a coffee too.

The 2006 AIDS Conference kicked off last night, and all the celebrities (Alicia Keys, Bill Gates, etc.) showed up. Very sadly, Stephen Harper didn't.

Federer surprised nobody at all as he won the Rogers Cup just as everyone expected.

Dufferin Grove Park is instaling a composting toilet, giving dogs in the park yet another thing to sniff at while they run around.

While some people were enjoying the festivities on the Toronto waterfront yesterday, a woman slipped and drowned in the Toronto harbour.

Even family restaurants like Swiss Chalet aren't immune to sexual predators, as a young boy and his family sadly found out this weekend.

A anti-war rally this weekend that was otherwise peaceful got ugly when protestors started to burn flags. Which is precisely the way to make sure your message is completely disregarded.

On the same weekend a massive bike sculpture graced the waterfront, a west end man stopped a would-be bike thief in action. A good weeekend for bikes in the city all around.
