House of the week: 638 Millwood Road

638 Millwood Road, a renovated three-bedroom near Bayview and Davisville, is newly listed for $1,329,000. According to a recent report by the Toronto Real Estate Board, the new price for a detached home in the 416 just skyrocketed to $1.15 million, up 18 percent since last year. Technically, this charming abode is only slightly above the average.

The Millwood residence with its bright red door is anything but plain from the inside. A wall accented with exposed brick and a fireplace leading to the dining room, cooking area and a step-down family room.

Perhaps the most striking feature is the unusual chrome staircase. The open stairs will make you do a double take, a partition separating the kitchen from the living space. It's a unique staircase--not everyone's taste--but complimentary to a wild kitchen with integrated wood ceilings and granite counters.

Millwood is an interesting street with a mix of residential and small retail shops, beginning at Yonge and Eg. and winding its way through Leaside and the DVP. There's even one of those freaky Toronto Hydro electric substations on the street, posing as a camouflaged home. Think this $1.3 million detached is just "average?" Have your say in the comments below.

GOOD FOR

Outdoor entertaining. The family room has floor-to-ceiling windows, overlooking the back patio and lawn. It's a private fenced-in yard with tall shrubs and trellises so you no longer have to look away from your neighbour's hanging laundry.

MOVE ON IF

You don't want a skylight in your bedroom. While visually stunning, the master features a skylight which doesn't seem necessary with all the windows and makes for a very noisy rainfall.
